Obituary
Died - In this city on Monday last, Mr. W. L. Campbell, an old citizen of this
place.
This is Sue's great, great grandfather, William L. Campbell, b. ca 1817, d. 25
Nov 1867. He served in the Seminole War, Lesley's Company, Florida Mounted
Volunteers, 12 March 1856 to 19 May 1856, and again from 7 November 1856 to 19
February 1857. During Civil War was War Tax Assessor for Polk County, Florida.
Was required to file a Pardon Application with President Andrew Jackson to be
granted his citizenship, since he had served as a Confederate government
official during the war. Also, he may have served as an officer in a local
militia unit during the war (have not been able to prove this, but have seen a
soldier's Florida Pension Application where William L. Campbell was listed as
the Commanding Officer.) He was a merchant in Tampa for any years and also
farmed in the Keysville area in Hillsborough County and in the Socrum area of
Polk County. Was one of the members of a committee that wrote the Resolution
for Hillsborough County that requested the State of Florida to succeed from the
union.
