BEENHAKKER, Arie, DRS., PhD., 67, passed away at home with his loving family on Thursday, April 25, 2002. "We Have Lost A True Gentleman and Scholar". Arie was born in Haarlem, Holland on June 29, 1934. At the age of 7, during World War II, Arie was interred by the Japanese in a concentration camp in Indonesia where he managed to survive under horrific conditions until liberated by American Forces. After a brief stint as a Lieutenant in the Royal Dutch Army, Arie went onto receive his Doctoral Degree in business administration and economics from the Rotterdam School of Economics, Erasmus University, Holland, in 1961 and in 1964 received his PhD. Degree in economics from Purdue University, Indiana. His PhD. thesis anticipated present-day European economic integration through the formation of the European Economic Community (the EEC) and the present movement to a common European currency (the euro). His professional career abounds with outstanding achievements in research, consulting, published written works, and academia. Arie was a Distinguished Service Professor of Finance in the College of Business Administration at the University of South Florida for 27 years and has been awarded "Professor Emeritus". More importantly than his outstanding professional achievements, Arie was a wonderful husband to 37 years to his wife, Ann Beenhakker; and loving father to his son, Andre Beenhakker, and his daughter, Adria Beenhakker- Dickey. Everyone who knew Arie was touched by his kindness, sincerity, and great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed, but has left us all with a legacy of wonderful memories. His strong Christian faith has undoubtedly assured him a special place in heaven. He is survived by his twin brother, Henri Louis Beenhakker; and his sister, Lotty Beenhakker DeVries. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 29, 2002 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private at Lake Carroll Cemetery . The family will receive friends one hour prior to time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LifePath Hospice, 3010 W. Azeele St., Tampa, FL 33609.
